A lifelong moderate Democrat from working-class roots, she’s tough on injustice and unwavering in her values. The shift from middle class to relying on her church, grandparents and community support after her parents’ divorce shaped her lifelong passion for economic fairness and family values.Married for 19 years to her college sweetheart Steve, a retired Air Force officer, Jenna is raising and educating their son in Douglas County with the same strong values she grew up with. After his military retirement and Jenna’s completion of her doctoral training, they made that dream a reality—eventually settling in Parker after road-tripping through five national parks. She attended Catholic schools through college, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Minor in Fine Arts from Seton Hall University—graduating magna cum laude thanks to federal grants, student loans, and part-time jobs. She then moved to Capitol Hill in Washington, DC and earned a Master’s degree in Art Therapy from The George Washington University [GWU].Military life brought her back to the DC area, where she used her husband’s Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to pursue a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She completed her degree while raising a young son and teaching as an adjunct professor at GWU and through Steve’s final military deployment. In college, she worked as a resident assistant and spent summers counseling inner-city kids at Camp Hope. After earning her degrees, she worked in psychiatric hospitals, with underserved youth, and later opened a private practice in England, serving American military families while living abroad during Steve’s Air Force assignment at RAF Mildenhall.From community mental health centers to law enforcement therapy sessions to jail-based group work, Jenna has served some of the country’s most vulnerable. Currently, she’s a highly respected clinical psychologist on a Space Force Base in Aurora, where she’s delivered over 10,000 behavioral health sessions for active-duty service members from all six branches, treating symptoms such as trauma, depression, addiction, stress, chronic pain, and anxiety. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEDecember 30, 2025 2026 Congressional Candidate Dr. Jenna Preston Highlights Mental Health Needs Inside Colorado Correctional FacilitiesArapahoe County, CO — As communities and lawmakers enter 2026 facing ongoing challenges related to public safety, mental health, and correctional capacity, 2026 congressional candidate Dr.Jenna Preston, a licensed clinical psychologist is drawing attention to the role jails now play in responding to mental health needs.In December, Preston visited the Arapahoe County Detention Facility at the invitation of Sheriff Tyler Brown. The visit was prompted by Preston’s background in behavioral health and her prior experience providing therapy services to Metropolitan Police Department officers in Washington, D.C., as well as co-facilitating weekly group therapy inside a county jail in Northern Virginia.“I have seen how law enforcement and correctional facilities are increasingly responding to mental health crises,” Preston said. “These facilities were not built to function as mental health hospitals.”Nationally, an estimated 11 million individuals pass through jails each year, and research indicates that approximately 44 percent to 65 percent of incarcerated individuals have a mental health condition. This rate is significantly higher than that of the general population. Experts believe the number may be higher, as some individuals do not disclose or are not diagnosed with mental health conditions.During her visit, Preston toured the facility with Sheriff Brown and observed efforts to expand medical and mental health services. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has used CARES Act funding to begin making structural improvements to its medical area to support both medical and mental health care. Officials have indicated that additional funding is needed to continue these upgrades and maintain services.Preston also discussed challenges related to facility safety, including the risk of use of drones to deliver contraband, such as drugs and cell phones, into correctional facilities. Local law enforcement agencies face jurisdictional limitations that require coordination with federal authorities, which can restrict their ability to respond independently.Sheriff Brown’s leadership philosophy emphasizes compassion and accountability, and he has outlined a long-term vision for the future of the Arapahoe County correctional system. Programs offered inside the jail, including further support for the&nbsp; RISE (Restoring Individuals Safely and Effectively) program, which provides recovery-oriented and trauma-informed care and demonstrates how access to behavioral health services can support individuals during incarceration and re-entry.“These programs show that accountability and access to care can exist at the same time,” Preston said.Looking ahead to the 2026 election cycle, Preston said she supports federal funding for medical and mental health services, including services for incarcerated individuals. The loss of a fellow provider and a parent is devastating, not only for their families but for the communities they served.These tragedies are a reminder of the real human cost when violence occurs and when systems meant to protect people fall short. She has been an art therapist for more than 30 years, working largely with members of the military and their families. Dr. Preston is now taking her mental health advocacy back to Washington, DC, where her career first began, by running for Congress.<h3>As an art therapist, what excites (or inspires) you most about your job right now?</h3>For the past 7 years, I have been working full-time in Colorado with military members from all six branches of our military and their family members, using my skills as both an art therapist and clinical psychologist. What excites me about my job right now is the honor of being a part of treatment team that is committed to challenging the stigma attached to engaging in mental health services, being open to different treatment modalities, and understanding that treating the behavioral/mental health of our patients is crucial to treating the whole person.I’m also so inspired by my role as a volunteer art therapist for the <a href="https://www.taps.org/">Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors [TAPS]</a> throughout the year.<h3>If you were talking to a potential client about why art therapy is unique (or why it’s effective) what would you say?</h3>This makes me think back to patients I have worked with in hospitals, community mental health clinics, private practice, during workshops, and inside open art therapy studios. As an art therapist, it starts with being attuned to a person’s nonverbal response to first hearing that “art therapy” is a treatment option. Excitement? Anxiety? Avoidance? I try to meet their response with calm assurance that the art process can be a vessel to help them work through their depression, trauma, grief, etc without judgement.Also, the art process can help create a tangible image that may help them begin to find the words to express what they have been going through, help guide their treatment, and serve as a tool to unlock their defenses so they can begin to connect to what they feel and remember.<h3>Has working with a particular client group shaped your professional focus or specialty?</h3>I am so grateful for the variety of client groups I have been able to work with throughout my career and each opportunity has shaped my skills as a provider. I began my career as an art therapist working inside an inpatient psychiatric hospital providing only art therapy groups to hospitalized adults and adolescents.During those seven years, I learned the power of group dynamics in treatment and gained experience working with severity of mental health diagnoses (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, detox, severe depression, etc), that I don’t often see in outpatient work. I spent a significant portion of my career working with children and adolescent clients in community mental health clinics in OR, WA, and VA. These experiences shaped my specialty in family therapy work, adolescent development, and working with youth in the foster care system. My current work with active duty military and military survivors has strengthened my belief that so much of the work we do is helping people work through trauma.<h3>Tell us about your average day as an art therapist.</h3>I work full-time on a military base, inside the primary care clinic using the integrative behavioral health model. I use my clinical psychology skills to provide brief, solutions-focused treatment for symptoms of anxiety, trauma, stress, ADHD, chronic pain, etc. An average day is very fast-paced, completing 6 -16 patient encounters per day, providing individual appointments, facilitating stress/anxiety and ADHD classes, and collaborating with other treatment team members. I use my art therapy skills every chance I can, especially when treating military children and conducting workshops on trauma and stress.“I am currently running for Congress to advocate for mental health. I believe the country is in need of leaders that possess the unique skills we have as therapists to listen with compassion, treat people without judgement or discrimination, and help to make lives better in all those we serve.”— Jenna Michalik Preston, Psy.D., LP, ATR-BC<h3>Tell us about your involvement with AATA.</h3>After graduating from George Washington University in 1996 and while still living on Capitol Hill [in Washington, DC], I became the chairperson for AATA’s federal legislative affairs subcommittee followed by the Chairperson for AATA’s Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC).During that time, I learned the power of collaboration and advocacy, through meeting regularly with AATA’s lobbyist, representing AATA within the National Alliance for Pupil Service Organizations [NAPSO], and facilitating Hill Days to bring art therapists onto Capitol Hill to meet with their representatives. After I left DC in 2003 to move to England and opened a private practice serving military families – but I was also able to continue collaboration, after accepting a position as the co-regional coordinator for the Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire region of the British Association of Art Therapists [BAAT]. After I returned to the states, I was invited to serve on the ATCBs Job Analysis Committee for several terms and on the ATCBs Certification Committee where I assisted in the development and administration of our Art Therapy certification exam. The relationships I formed and experiences I gained from all this volunteer work remain a part of my daily work and I am forever grateful for it!<h3>Did your interest in federal policy-making continue?</h3>Yes! I am currently running for political office (U.S. Congress) in Colorado to advocate for mental health. After I left DC in 2003 to move to England and opened a private practice serving military families – but I was also able to continue collaboration, after accepting a position as the co-regional coordinator for the Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire region of the British Association of Art Therapists [BAAT]. After I returned to the states, I was invited to serve on the ATCBs Job Analysis Committee for several terms and on the ATCBs Certification Committee where I assisted in the development and administration of our Art Therapy certification exam. The relationships I formed and experiences I gained from all this volunteer work remain a part of my daily work and I am forever grateful for it!<h3>Did your interest in federal policy-making continue?</h3>Yes! I am currently running for political office (U.S. Congress) in Colorado to advocate for mental health. Congress in Colorado’s 4th District and licensed clinical psychologist, is speaking out against the overnight cuts to federal mental health and substance use funding, including funding that was already appropriated by Congress and intended to support communities in crisis.“These cuts are devastating,” Preston said. “At a moment when more people than ever are struggling, pulling funding with no warning is irresponsible and dangerous.”Colorado is already facing one of the most serious mental health crises in the country. According to Mental Health America, Colorado ranks 49th or 50th in behavioral health support, meaning CO residents experiencing mental health challenges already lack access to the help they need. The state also ranks in the top 10 for adult substance use disorder prevalence, highlighting how widespread the need for treatment truly is.Nearly three in ten Colorado adults report living with a mental health condition, well above the national average. Workforce shortages, affordability issues, and limited services mean far too many people still cannot get the help they need.“This affects families, veterans, first responders, postpartum women in treatment, and entire communities,” Preston said. “You cannot talk about public safety, economic stability, or reducing addiction to substances like fentanyl, while stripping away mental health and substance use services that people rely on.”Preston criticized the cuts as a failure of leadership at the federal level.“This is a direct reflection of an administration that is not listening to the reality families are living with,” she said. “Stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma are rising, and instead of responding with care, these services are being taken away.”Preston made clear that mental health and substance use treatment would be a top priority if elected to Congress.“I would fight to restore this funding and push to increase it,” Preston said. “This is not a side issue. My name is Dr. Jenna Preston. I am a clinical psychologist, a mom, a military spouse, and a proud member of this community. For 30 years, I’ve been a therapist working with individuals and families during their most difficult moments and currently I treat your military stationed at Buckley Space Force Base helping them work through trauma, depression, and stress. In my work, I’ve learned something that applies far beyond a therapy office: systems cannot improve unless we are willing to be honest about where they are falling short and you cannot heal a system if you are afraid to speak the truth about how it’s broken. That belief is what led me to run for Congress in the 4th Congressional District (CD4). I saw a district full of hardworking people who felt overlooked, unheard, and disconnected from the decisions being made on their behalf. I believed then, and still believe now, that our community deserves thoughtful, transparent, and accountable leadership. This experience has also reinforced something I’ve seen throughout this campaign: too many capable, community-driven candidates face unnecessary barriers to participation and there is too much money in politics.&nbsp; I firmly believe we will never have another fair election in our lifetime without campaign finance reform.&nbsp;&nbsp; The process feels inaccessible or discouraging to many as people in positions of power stop allowing space for change or for people to feel heard and understood.&nbsp; When this happens, it limits who is able to step forward and serve. That is something we should all care about, regardless of party or position.&nbsp; I have personally heard from people in our community that the “Big Tent” we profess to be feels more like a closed door to many in practice. I’ve been a Democrat since 1990, but we need to reflect on why we have lost 60% of registered dems in Colorado over the past 10 years and why there’s less than 2% participate in caucus and assembly.&nbsp;&nbsp; Many of you know me as the "Purple" candidate (blend between red and blue), not because I lack conviction, but because I believe our country is being torn apart by the two-party system that demands we pick a side and stay there.&nbsp; I believe the majority of us fall in the middle and there is more that unites us — like wanting to know we can afford groceries, that our daughters will be protected, and our candidates and elected officials will be fair and honest.Over the past eight months, I have had the opportunity to meet so many of you, hear your concerns, and I carry your stories with me. I am deeply grateful for the trust and support you’ve shown me and believing I can be the change we need.&nbsp; I also believe it’s important to be direct about what has happened.I intended to qualify for the ballot through the petition process. I worked hard to do my part, personally gathering signatures and engaged directly with voters across the district. Unfortunately, a vendor I relied on to complete that process did not fulfill their obligations, and that failure was not communicated honestly or in a timely manner. As a result, I will not appear on the ballot as planned. That is difficult to say, but I believe you deserve transparency and I was raised by a single mother who taught me that integrity is the only thing you take with you at the end of the day. Right now, I am taking time to carefully consider next steps, including the possibility of a write-in campaign. It is not an easy path, but it is one that would allow us to continue this conversation and this work together and give us a choice.No matter what comes next, I remain committed to this community. Whether in my professional role or in public service, my goal is the same: to listen, to lead with integrity, and to leave things better than I found them. That commitment will never change.
